My mother and all of the neighbor women made and wore these daily. They called them drindl skirts. They were the jeans of the 1950s. They were worn for casual non-events, such as making meatloaf and dealing with the countless bee stings the children had each summer. By the way, Nancy Drew wore "dungarees" and I believe they were a 1950s thing, if the poodle skirts aren't going to make it through your book.
